Singles Awareness Day. One of the many new names developed in the 21st Century to describe one of the most loved and hated holday's of the year; Valentines Day. I myself, have never had a Valentine, and at 21 years old, I guess you could say that I am a little bit salty about it.
The other day I was having a casual conversation with my mother about it and I kid you not, this is what she said (I am paraphrasing); "Valentine's Day isn't that special, I'd much rather spend a day celebrating our anniversary with your father. That's our day. We don't share it with everyone else". Fair enough but... Can you fucking not! Boo hoo, you've had a Valentine for the last 23-years and Dad still buys you flowers every year; it must be so difficult for you!
I know what everyone's going to say. "You're so young, don't worry". I'm not worried, I'm annoyed. Not so much that I don't have a valentine, but the fact that I've never had one. I've never had that experience and when you see everyone else go through it, you get a little disheartened. Doing things by yourself is great, but when there's a whole holiday dedicated to celebrating with your 'other half', you have every right to be a little upset.
On a positive note though, I love how this generation has also turned this day into the opportunity to celebrate with all your Gal Pals for what we like to call, Galentines Day. A lot of organisations use it as a way to raise money for various charities. So if you havn't heard of it, I highly suggest looking into it for next year. Turn Singles Awareness Day into Galentines Day. Grab the wine, the ice-cream and a trashy movie and try and find some way to enjoy this day other that being alone. Do NOT make the same mistake I did this year. Turn you sorrows into smiles!
